Sep 15, 2020

President Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia (Gerakan) Datuk Dr Dominic Lau Hoe Chai urge Malaysian to take advantage of Malaysia Day to understand once again the history of the founding of Malaysia, in order to continue consolidating the unity and sense of belonging people of East and West Malaysia, also catalyze the harmonious development of the states and peoples of East and West Malaysia.

He said that although Malaysia government has set September 16 as a public holiday in 2009, but believed that there are still many Malaysians do not understand the meaning of this holiday, especially the new generation of young people who have not experienced the founding period. It is impossible to understand the arduous process of the country’s ancestors from fighting for independence to Malaysia’s formation, and therefore lacking a deep-rooted feeling for the country.

“September 16, 1963 was the day when Sarawak and Sabah formed Malaysia with the Federation of Malaya after they broke away from British rule. Therefore, 16 September was named Malaysia Day to commemorate the day that made ‘Malaysia’ formally formed. I believe that Malaysia Day, a special and meaningful day, should be valued by the country, and not only celebrated in East Malaysia.”

Dominic Lau Hoe Chai made the above remarks in his  Malaysia Day message.

He emphasized that as a Malaysian, diversity is our country’s strength and the secret of winning. History has proved that if people can unite and support each other, they can overcome any challenge or adversity.

“Our country has great potential and even greater achievements, but all divisions and extreme politics must be stopped in order to achieve true unity.”

He also reminded political leaders of the ruling and opposition parties that unity is from top to bottom and that national leaders must be cautious in their words and deeds, and consider the interests of the country and the people, rather than using divide-and-conquer methods to gain votes and destroy the country.
