Gerakan: Multi-racial Cabinet needed to focus on economic recovery

Mar 2, 2020

KUALA LUMPUR: Gerakan has called on Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to immediately form a new Cabinet to continue the administration of the government.

Its president Datuk Dr Dominic Lau Hoe Chai expressed his hope that the newly-minted prime minister would be a fair premier to all races in the country and form a multi-racial Cabinet.

“Malaysia is a multi-racial country. The nation’s independence was the collective efforts of all races. We hope Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin will maintain this tradition of harmony by forming a multi-racial cabinet,” Lau said in a statement today.

He also reminded the prime minister to prioritise on the economy which was badly impacted by the Covid-19 coronavirus.

Yesterday, Muhyiddin took his oath of office as the country’s eight prime minister before the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, at Istana Negara.

On Feb 29, the Comptroller of the Royal Household, Datuk Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin, announced Muhyiddin’s appointment as the prime minister, bringing to a conclusion a week of political uncertainty surrounding a leadership crisis in the federal administration.

His appointment was made after the King determined that Muhyiddin was “most likely to command a majority” after granting an audience to all political party leaders and independent Members of Parliament.
