Gerakan: Review hiring of foreign workers policy

Jun 5, 2020

KUALA LUMPUR: Gerakan has called on the government to review its foreign workers hiring policy, more so now when the nation faces difficulty in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The proposal was meant to balance the re-growth of the industrial sector which is dependent on foreign workers, said its president Datuk Dominic Lau.

“The government needs to look into the proposal to suspend or restrict the entry of foreign workers for a specific period of time in order for the government to better deal with the problem of unemployment and so on until the country is stable,” he said in a statement today.

He said the move not only would address the issue of excess foreign workers but also would assist the government in revitalising the nation’s economy in a more comprehensive manner.

“In addition, there is also a need to impose stringent restrictions to prevent illegal migrants from entering the country, and as such the government can implement voluntary return campaign to encourage illegal migrants to return to their home country.”

Therefore, a review of foreign workers’ policies should be implemented to curb unemployment, and economic and social issues in the country, he added.
