Gerakan tells Anwar to come clean on claim of support

KUALA LUMPUR: PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim should come clean with his claim that he had the support from members of Parliament to change the government.

Gerakan president Datuk Dr Dominic Lau Hoe Chai described the latest development in the political sphere as a self-centred move.

He said the party’s central committee, after a meeting, condemned the opposition leader’s latest stunt to secure the position of prime minister.

“Anwar should not make claims without any substantive evidence. The rakyat have lost interest in the political by-play as the country is busy battling the Covid-19 pandemic,” Lau said, stressing that the people were tired of the political tug-of-war.

The people, he said, wanted proof and not just words.

Lau also called on Anwar to give priority to the well-being of the nation and its people rather than his own political agenda.

“What the country needs now is not only a good leader, but someone who can find solutions to keep the country safe from the pandemic. This is not the time for a power tussle,” he said, urging Anwar to stop making empty claims.

“If you really have the majority support and the numbers, please list down their names and hand them over to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. Let the King decide based on that,” said Lau.

He warned that any form of political uncertainty coupled with the Covid-19 pandemic would further impact the country’s economy, pointing out that Malaysia had been hit hard by the pandemic for the past seven months.

“Gerakan wishes to reiterate its unwavering support for Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as the country needs his leadership to ride the Covid-19 storm,” he said, adding that the party agreed with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah’s call to all politicians not to plunge the country into another round of political uncertainty.

Lau said Gerakan would soon launch an online petition campaign in support of the King’s call for maintaining harmony.
