Gerakan to Penang: Clarify Jerejak island land issue

Aug 14, 2020

GEORGE TOWN: Gerakan has urged the Penang government to come clean on the status of development in Pulau Jerejak.

This comes after unconfirmed reports claimed some 32.38 ha of the forest reserve on the island had been converted into private land.

Gerakan vice-president Oh Tong Keong urged the state government to clarify whether it was sold to a private consortium to be developed.

“Pulau Jerejak is a green lung in the state, if it is developed it will destroy the ecology of the forest.

“It is still unclear who owns the 32ha land. Penang must respond,” he said in a statement today.

Responding to the queries, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yew earlier said that Penang Development Corporation (PDC) would issue a statement on the matter.

It was reported that the island’s redevelopment master plan covered the construction of a bridge connecting Pulau Jerejak to the mainland, 1,200 residential units, a special port to berth yacht and boats (marina) and four star and five star hotels.

Also included are a theme park, an 11.5km long bicycle lane and other infrastructure to further enhance tourism activities in the state.
