Parliament should not convene for anyone to fulfil personal political agendas, says Gerakan

KUALA LUMPUR: Gerakan president Datuk Dr Dominic Lau said Parliament should reopen only to debate and discuss issues on fighting the Covid-19 pandemic.

Speaking at a press conference after the party’s central committee meeting, Lau said it would only be “a waste of time” if Parliament reconvenes to fulfil personal political agendas.

“Parliament will reopen in the end, with a set of standard operating procedures. What the public wants to know is the purpose and agenda behind the reopening of the lower house.

“Is it to (discuss) steps to curb the spread of Covid-19, or policies that would ensure the safety and livelihoods of the people?

“If it is only to put forth personal political agendas, then you will lose the true purpose of Parliament sittings, and it is the same as not holding sessions and does not bring any benefit to the people,” he said.

The public, he said, should use this opportunity to evaluate the performance of their elected representatives.

Lau added that if the Member of Parliament only focused on personal political gain, it was a “clear cut sign” that they only want the Dewan Rakyat to reopen for their own sake.

“This is not what the public wants to see.”

After over a two-hour meeting with various parties on Wednesday, Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah and the Malay rulers said Parliament should sit as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, Lau said the party’s central committee had endorsed a proposal to form an integrity bureau, which will be in charge of its ISO:37001 anti-bribery management system certification.

He said the establishment of the party’s integrity bureau was necessary, and aligned with its ideologies to ensure that Gerakan was clean from corruption.
