PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and his wife Puan Sri Norainee Abdul Rahman joined Gerakan’s virtual Chinese New Year open house on Friday (Feb 12) under the new norms.

Muhyiddin, who is also the Perikatan Nasional chairman, was seen with Perikatan component party leaders including Gerakan president Datuk Dr Dominic Lau, whose party officially became the newest member of the coalition on Thursday (Feb 11).

In Lau’s opening speech, which was broadcast on the party’s Facebook page, he revealed that initially Gerakan had made vigorous preparations for the Prime Minister to physically attend the open house with strict standard operating procedures (SOPs).

“Because the government had just announced the current movement control order (MCO), we had to make sure the Prime Minister was safe if he decided to come to our open house,” he said.

“However, once the SOP for Chinese New Year was announced, we had to change (our plans).

“We decided to do it online this time,” he added.

He also thanked the Prime Minister for accepting Gerakan as part of Perikatan.

“Thank you for believing in us and allowing us to join Perikatan. This is the best gift for Gerakan this year,” he said.

On Thursday, Muhyiddin said Gerakan’s admission received unanimous endorsement from the coalition’s supreme council.

Later, Muhyiddin, who was seen wearing a red batik shirt, and his wife joined the other Perikatan leaders to toss the Yee Sang.

Yee Sang is a Teochew-style fish salad, considered a symbol of prosperity, vigour and abundance.

Perikatan secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, who also joined the virtual open house, took the opportunity to wish those celebrating a happy Chinese New Year.

“We also would like to welcome Gerakan to Perikatan Nasional,” added Hamzah.
