GERAKAN leader: It’s akin to intimidation

Dis 22, 2019

GEORGE TOWN: The remarks by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad on the planned gathering on Dec 28 by Dong Jiao Zong is akin to intimidating the Chinese educationist and community, reported China Press.

Gerakan deputy president Oh Tong Keong said all Chinese associations must stay united and prevent the gathering from being called off.

Earlier, Dr Mahathir had said the planned gathering by Chinese associations over the Jawi calligraphy module issue would further divide the country.

He said the Malays would have their own gathering and talk about closing Chinese schools.

Oh urged DAP – with its six ministers, seven deputy ministers and 43 MPs – to come forward to safeguard the interest of the Chinese community.

He pointed out that Dr Mahathir had once labelled Dong Jiao Zong as communist.

“I urge Lim and other DAP leaders to stop a tyrant from victimising his subjects. They must defend Dong Jiao Zong and the planned gathering,” he said.

Dong Jiao Zong, the umbrella body comprising Dong Zong (United Chinese School Committees’ Association) and Jiao Zong (United Chinese School Teachers’ Association), is planning the gathering on Dec 28 over the move to introduce Jawi calligraphy in vernacular schools.
