Report: Perikatan gunning for 23 seats in Penang poll; state Gerakan chief claims has Malay voter support

KUALA LUMPUR, April 3 — The Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition believes it has a 50-50 chance of wresting Penang from the ruling Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the coming state election due this year, The Star reported today.

State Gerakan chief chairman Oh Tong Keong told the newspaper that PN is targeting 23 out of the 40 state seats and is confident that support for the coalition has increased, especially in 15 Malay-dominated areas.

“The seat negotiation is almost complete, with more than 90 per cent of seats being decided. However, the talk is still ongoing. The support for PN is obvious, especially from the Malays.

“As of now, our focus is to go down to the ground and work in the constituencies we are going to contest,” he was quoted as saying.

The daily also reported Penang PAS commissioner Muhammad Fauzi Yusoff saying that PN plans to use a common logo for all its candidates in the coming state election, without disclosing which one it will be.

“We will go to the polls as one entity. It’s Perikatan versus Pakatan Harapan,” he was quoted as saying.

Penang has been under DAP control since Election 2008.

Back then, DAP teamed up with PKR and PAS to form the Pakatan Rakyat coalition, but broke up in 2015 when the Islamist party exited.

A PAS faction later formed Parti Amanah Rakyat (Amanah) and together with DAP and PKR, established the PH coalition as it is known today.

In Election 2018, DAP continued to win the most seats at 19, followed by PKR with 14, and two each for Amanah, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia, and Umno. PAS won only one seat.
