Gerakan has submitted list, eyeing five seats

JOHOR BARU: Gerakan is expected to contest at least five seats in the upcoming state election.

Its Johor chief Datuk Teo Kok Chee said the party had submitted a list of seats it was keen to take on to the Perikatan Nasional central leadership.

“We hope to contest the Perling, Bukit Batu, Puteri Wangsa, Pekan Nenas and Johor Jaya seats. We feel we might have a higher chance of winning in these seats,” he said.

Perikatan is expected to announce its candidates list on Feb 18 or Feb 23.

“The party’s list has also been submitted to its central leadership to decide. Perikatan will also submit its candidates list to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission and police for screening.

“So far, all shortlisted Gerakan candidates have ‘clean’ records, but we will wait for the authorities’ reports,” said Teo.

Last Friday, Gerakan president Datuk Dr Dominic Lau said the party would contest a maximum of 10 seats in the Johor election.

“In GE14, we contested two state seats and one parliamentary seat. In this election, we would be getting more seats.

“Seat allocation has been finalised and the exact number will be announced by Perikatan chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin soon.

“For now, we can only reveal that there will be more seats compared to GE14 but fewer than 10 seats,” Lau said last week.

In the 14th General Election, Gerakan contested the Bukit Batu and Pemanis state seats as well as the Simpang Renggam parliamentary seat but lost in all.
