Gerakan tells Penang to allow food catering business to resume operation

May 14, 2020

GEORGE TOWN: Gerakan has urged Penang government to allow food catering services to resume operations with immediate effect.

This follows the state government’s decision to allow dine-in only in hotels, shopping malls and fast food restaurants beginning tomorrow.

State Gerakan chief Oh Tong Keong said the state government had prior to this announced that all businesses in the state would be allowed to resume operations from Wednesday.

He said those in the food catering service had stocked up on the necessities to get ready to reopen their businesses.

“However, the state government’s decision is disappointing. The caterers have lost income for more than two months and now they are suffering further losses.

“Besides hotels, shopping malls and fast food operations, they should be allowed to resume operations. The Penang government must discuss with those from this industry and allow them to operate,” he said today.

The national Gerakan deputy president said the state government must know the measures to be taken by those in the food catering business.

“And if the state government is satisfied with these measures, the food caterng operators should be allowed to operate.

“I believe the industry is more than ready to work with the state government because by doing so they can resume business,” he added.

On Tuesday, Penang announced that it would allow dine-in in hotels, shopping malls and fast food franchaises statewide according to the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) announced by the local councils.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow had said that dine-in in other premises would be announced in subsequent phases.

Last Friday, Penang kicked off its own version of the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) – the Penang Gradual Recovery Strategy (PGRS).

On May 3, the Penang government had announced that the CMCO would not be implemented as announced by Putrajaya on May 4.

Chow had instead said Penang would implement the PGRS, which would reopen sectors of the economy in stages from May 8 to 13.
