National President of Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia Datuk Dr Dominic Lau Hoe Chai lambasted the PH government for approving license to build a domestic firearms factory in Malaysia.
“Before firearms it was marijuana farm. The PH government needs to rethink deeply on the dire consequences on social impact once the factory is set up. We appreciate the PH government efforts in bringing in investments but we must be selective of type of investments we are bringing in,” he said.
“I urge all Malaysians to voice up and stop this firearms factory. We are talking about guns and firearms, which has very dangerous consequences towards our society who has been living peacefully and in harmony.
U.S. is giving us a good example because many people die from gun-related injuries each year. Imagine the social costs associated with the existence of firearms on Malaysian land. Is our government ready to prevent illegal and smuggling of arms and fight for these crimes? How can government ensure public safety and security when our police are involved in this business?”
It was stated in foreign news that Turkish weapons manufacturer Tisas Trabzon Silah Sanayi has inked an agreement to establish a firearms manufacturing and assembly plant in Malaysia, which will be the first such facility in the country.
The firearm production and assembly plant would be developed by Malaysian companies KOP Mantap, a wholly owned unit of the Royal Malaysian Police Cooperative and an investment arm of the police force and IDC Technologies. The signing ceremony was witnessed by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad.
“It is totally unacceptable for a civil society to have the police force venture into business,” said Datuk Dr. Dominic.
