More will join Gerakan: Oh Tong Keong

GEORGE TOWN – More people are expected to join Gerakan ahead of the next general election, said party deputy president Oh Tong Keong.

Oh admitted that he is not surprised to learn that 300 members of the Ipoh Barat PKR branch had quit the party and joined Gerakan recently.

“I feel happy and welcome the presence of 300 new members in Ipoh Barat into Gerakan.

“We are always open to (members of) any party joining Gerakan, provided they agree with our ideology, which does not give priority to any race,” he told The Vibes recently.

Earlier, 300 members of the Ipoh Barat PKR branch had quit the party and joined Gerakan.

Perak Gerakan chairman Datuk See Tean Seng said they quit PKR a year ago and have officially joined Gerakan after receiving the membership application form.

Meanwhile, Oh, who is also Penang Gerakan chairman, said that last year, the state division received almost 500 membership applications, including some from former members of other political parties.

“In the past year, we have received membership forms from 50 Malays – some of them from Umno.

“Maybe they are fed up with race-based politics, so they change their minds by choosing Gerakan as their new party,” he said.

Oh said among other factors that have attracted many new members to join Gerakan is because the party is clean from abuse of power and court cases.

He said that so far, no leader from Gerakan has ever created controversy, even though the party has governed Penang for 39 years.

“We are a clean party. Maybe that’s the main reason many parties want to be with Gerakan,” he said. – The Vibes, March 27, 2021
