GERAKAN VP: Promote Unity, Respect Diversity

Feb 6, 2025

GERAKAN Vice President, Datuk Parameswaran, believes that political leaders should strive to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination and religious divides, achieve national consensus, and strengthen diversity, justice, and inclusivity.

He expressed his concerns regarding the guidelines currently being drafted on the participation of Muslims in celebrations and funeral ceremonies at non-Muslim places of worship. He hopes that these new guidelines will take into account the diversity of our country.

“The year 2025 should not be filled with unnecessary restrictions. Instead, we should welcome guidelines that can strengthen harmonious relations between different races. JAKIM should study properly don’t say unnecessary thing.

“However, as a Malaysian and a non-Muslim who upholds the constitution, I respect Islam as the official religion of the Federation. Nevertheless, the Islamic Religious Department should provide clear explanations on this matter to avoid any misunderstandings,” he said in a statement today.

He further stated that Anwar, as the Prime Minister and a Muslim, must ensure that these guidelines align with Islamic teachings while at the same time not jeopardizing the long-established harmony among different ethnic groups.

At the same time, he acknowledged that every religion has its own teachings about what is permissible and what is not. All parties must work towards breaking down racial and religious barriers that do not contribute to national unity. Ending racial discrimination and religious divides is a powerful force that can drive change, foster unity, and achieve consensus.

He emphasized that every minister, regardless of the ministry they lead, has a responsibility to maintain racial harmony. All political parties must cooperate and control actions that could spark dissatisfaction among the people, which could ultimately disrupt racial harmony.

“Our country is a multicultural and multi-religious society, yet there are still a handful of individuals who do not respect the beliefs and religious restrictions of others.”

“Above all, I urge people of all races to respect one another, understand each other’s religious sensitivities, and practice tolerance and mutual understanding in order to maintain national stability and social harmony,” he stressed.
